About the Order First traces of this order are found in 1778 with Thomas Dunckerley in the Royal Arch Chapter of Friendship at Portsmouth ".....making Templars". In 1779 the Templar Degree was worked under York Grand Lodge, and by 1780 there was a Supreme Grand Royal Encampment at Bristol and subsequently in 1791 a Grand Conclave with Dunckerley presiding as Grand Master. Co-incidentally the headquarters were shared by the Royal Ark and Mark Mariners of which Dunckerley was Grand Commander. The order made slow progress and up till the 1870's many different rituals were being practised, a standard working was produced around this time. The order actually comprises two sub-orders, separately conferred. The second, or Malta degree being preceded by a short degree named Knight of St. Paul and the Mediterranean Pass. The regalia is based on the clothing of the medieval Templars and Knights of Malta. The degrees are Christian in nature and require a belief in the Holy Trinity.
