In June 2004 The Grand Lodge of MMM agreed to make available a sum of £2 million from the Mark Benevolent Fund of Benevolence for the treatment of Prostate Cancer.

Amongst the Grants for which applications have been received, and were considered suitable by the General Board was one for £97,600 from the Royal Marsden Hospital, Fulham.

Christmas came early to The Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea this week when a mystery present was unwrapped to reveal a cheque for £97,600.00.

The donation came from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of London, whose members across London had raised funds throughout the year for the cancer specialist hospital.

The money donated by the Mark Master Masons will go towards the hospital's prostate brachytherapy research fund, lead by Dr Vincent Khoo, a clinical oncologist.

Brachytherapy is a new form of radiation treatment for prostate cancer, which works by placing radioactive "seeds" of iodine into the prostate gland.

Dr Khoo said, "We are delighted that the Mark Master Masons have been so generous with their fundraising.   This money will enable our urology unit to offer a full complement of established treatments for men with prostate cancer and make real progress in this area."

Provincial Grand Master David Williams said: "We are very pleased to be giving The Royal Marsden Hospital this early Christmas present and hope that the funds generated will enable the  hospital to keep making a difference to patients with prostate cancer."
