THE GRAND COUNCIL

The Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of England and Wales and its Districts and Councils Overseas was formed on the 29th July 1873, being sponsored by the Grand Council of New York, USA.

Grand Council currently comprises the following officers (Past Ranks included at all levels):-

14. Deputy Grand Chaplain
15. Deputy Grand Recorder
16. Grand Captain of the Guard
17. Grand Conductor of the Council
18. Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies
19. Grand Sword Bearer
20. Grand Standard Bearer
21. Grand Organist
22. Grand Steward
23. Grand Manciple

25. Masters of Private Councils

The prefix ‘Most Illustrious’ applies to the Grand (and Past Grand) Master
The prefix Right Illustrious applies to ranks 2-6 incl.
The prefix ‘Very Illustrious’ applies to ranks 7-12 incl.
The prefix ‘Illustrious’ applies to ranks 13-25 incl.

An assembly of Grand Council is held annually in the month of April (normally the third Tuesday) at Mark Masons’ Hall.

Every Companion of the Order, not being a member of Grand Council may be present at the annual meeting, with permission of the Grand Master, but is not entitled to speak or vote.

The Grand Master and the Grand Treasurer are elected at each annual meeting. The Grand Master is then installed and appoints and invests Companions to active and Past Ranks.

Grand Council possesses the inherent power of enacting laws and regulations for the government of the Order and of altering, repealing and abrogating them.

It also has the power of investigating, regulating and deciding all matter relative to the Order and alone possesses the authority for erasing Councils and expelling members.
